A.E Clifton Shield Semi – Finals

Reasonably clear skies, light winds, clearing fog and a course in great condition greeted the players.

In Semi Final 1, Matt Horton and Matt Smith took on Harry Wilde and Will Blomley. The two Matts have plenty of experience playing the Clifton Shield. Harry and Will are two of our rising stars, both members of the Apperly Shield team. It was to be a slow start for Harry and Will, who found birdies hard to come by early. The two Matts were 4 up at the turn and remained so after 11. Harry and Will won 12 with a par and then the birdies flowed. On the 17th tee the two Matts lead by a single hole. Matt Horton and Harry found the green, Harry duly sunk his 25 footer for birdie, and with the pressure on, Matt Horton followed him in from 20 feet for a halve. On the 18th green Harry sunk a birdie from 10 feet to win the hole and take the match down the 19th. On the 19th, once again it was Harry to the fore with a birdie to win the match. Over the last 7 holes, 6 were either halved or won by Harry and Will with birdies.

Semi Final 2 saw Todd Ostler and Robert Hall take on Matt Taylor and Daniel Williams. Todd and Robbie have many years of experience between them in the Clifton Shield and Major Pennants as do Matt and Daniel. This was sure to be a hard fought contest, and through the early stages it lived up to the billing with the match square as they teed off on 11. Matt and Daniel eased to a one hole advantage by the 13th, won 14 with birdie, and then 15 to find themselves 3 up with 3 to go. Halves in pars on 16 ended the match with Matt and Daniel prevailing 3 and 2.

The final on Saturday, August 1, over 36 holes promises to be a thrilling contest between two players with significant experience and the two young guns looking to win one of the club’s most significant events.
