Round 2 Report
A fine day, light winds and quick greens welcomed golfers in round 2 of the Championship. Whilst the sun disappeared on the back nine conditions remained good if not a little chilly. With the one cart, one person rule there were some traffic snarls at different times. Some may have been happy there was no on course RBT.
In the A Grade Championship, Lia Lavelle and Matt Horton shared the halfway lead with Helen Haynes and Kade Webber. Lia and Matt established a 6 shot lead at the turn, but, Helen and Kade launched a brave comeback to close within 1 after 16 holes, with Lia and Matt already in the clubhouse on 155 it was up to Helen and Kade to finish the last 2 holes in one under to force a play-off. In the end Lia and Matt prevailed by 4 shots. Helen and Kade could take some solace in taking out the nett A Grade trophy with 147.
Sue and Darren (Crackers) Tait were too consistent in the B Grade Championship. After round 1, they shared the lead with Annette and Len Robinson. Sue and Darren’s closing 93 for a combined score of 192 saw them take out a comprehensive victory by 8 shots from Cheryl and John Hayres. In the B Grade nett, Rhondda and Ray Clelland came out on top with 157, on a countback from Cheryl and John.
It was a pleasure to watch the teams finish their last 5 or 6 holes. What was clear was that all participants were clearly having a fun day. Even if some found the golf a little challenging from time to time, they all clearly enjoyed each-others company and lots of smiles and laughs were had.
Congratulations to all participants, particularly to our champions, Lia and Matt and Sue and Darren.

Round 1 Report, 21 June
The first round of the Mixed Foursome’s Championship started under cloudy skies. The early rain had cleared by the time the first group teed off. The alternate shot game is difficult enough in fine weather, so I am sure all pairings were pleased that the rain cleared. The course remained damp in patches and played longer than usual, winds were generally light.
Grades for the mixed foursomes are not determined by the traditional handicap grade classifications, but rather by splitting the championship into two grades of equal numbers. With 28 pairings competing, the pairings with the lowest 14 handicaps battle for A grade whilst the pairings with the highest 14 handicaps battle for B Grade. The major championship event in each grade is the scratch trophy whilst prizes are also awarded for nett winners. The winners of the Championship are ineligible for the nett prize.
The A grade championship looks to be a contest in 2 between Lia Lavelle and Matt Horton and Helen Haynes and Kade Webber with both pairings returning 79’s in round 1. All 4 players represented the club in their respective Major Pennant teams in 2020. Matt and Lia are the reigning champions and it will be interesting to see who comes out on top after the final 18 holes. The leaders of the A grade nett are Cassie Fernandez and Justin Field and Vicki Dunn and Ray Thacker, both pairings recording 72’s.
In B Grade both Annette and Len Robertson and Sue and Darren Tate lead, recording 99’s. Ray and Rhondda Clelland are 3 shots back on 102. The Robinson’s and Tait’s also hold the top 2 positions in the nett, Annette and Len with 74.5, leading Sue and Darren on 76. John and Cheryl Hayres (77) and Deborah and Terry Wishart (79.5) are also well placed.
Best of luck to all participants for round 2, next Sunday.
