Women’s Metropolitan Major Pennant – Round 6
Posted on: 4 February
The team was keen on redemption following our loss last week and the end of our semi-final hopes. The team prepared well again and were ready to go. Caddie illness resulted in Marie – Claire hopping on Annoushka’s bag.
Georgia led the way off the first tee in a reserve match. This was Georgia’s first match in Stonecutters colours. The rest of our order consisted of Sav (1), Annoushka (2), Sue (3), Lia (4) and Annabelle (5). Georgia and Annabelle had tough starts and were behind the “eight ball” by the turn. Annoushka turned 2 down, whilst Sav and Sue made the turn square. Lia was off to a fast start and turned 7 up.
The first point went to Stonecutters, Lia winning 9/7. Georgia continued to fight hard but eventually her opponent took the reserve match 4/3. At about the same time Annabelle lost her battle 5/3. 1 -1 with three matches on course. Sav, Annouska and Sue were engaged in tight battles but were gaining the upper hand, all 3 1 up thru 15. Sue and Annoushka maintained their 1-hole leads as they ventured down the 18th. Sav’s opponent sunk a 35-foot birdie putt on 17 to draw even. As the manager commenced the drive down 18 Sue was on the green in 2, as was her opponent and Annoushka and her opponent had split the fairway with their tee shots. Sue calmly 2 putted to complete a 1 up victory and bring us our second point. Annoushka and her opponent had both found the green with their second shots, whilst Sav and her opponent had both driven down the fairway. A 2 putt from Annoushka secured her victory (1 up) and we had our third point, the match was secured. Sav and her opponent hit the green. Sav putted to 3-foot whist her opponent completed a remarkable birdie, birdie finish by draining a 30 footer to take the match 1 up.
End result 3 – 2 to Stonecutters. In the washup we finished bottom of the section, but in a closely fought section we were only 1 point from qualifying for the semi-finals.
Small margins were the determining factor, the team was left ruing some missed opportunities that would have seen us progress. Our focus is always on identifying the learning opportunities and becoming better and stronger as individuals and a team.
I would like to thank every team member, Annabelle, Annoushka, Georgia, Lia, Marie- Claire, Sav, and Sue. You have all represented your club with pride and placed team interests ahead of personal interests. Special mention to Marie Claire and Georgia who didn’t get a lot of game-time but were always there to caddie when needed or simply provide fabulous support to your teammates.
We would like to thank our caddies, supporters, our major sponsor, Medalist Homes and the Stonecutters membership. Onwards and upwards, after a few weeks of well-earned down time our preparation for season 2026 begins. We will strive to improve on our 2025 performance.
