Eric Apperly Shield – Round 2 Update

Posted on: 18 July

Overcast skies and a moderate breeze welcomed us to Cronulla on Sunday. Up against Pennant Hills who took some points off a quality St Michaels outfit last week we new the contest would be a tight one and that we would have to play well to bring home the win. The early holes saw us eke out a slight advantage which was maintained at the halfway point. Throughout the back nine Pennant hills proved tough to shake and whilst the slight advantage was maintained we were a long way from security. Michelle (5/3) and Darcy (4/3) were our first points on the board.

At this point on course Miguel was 1 down, Ryan square, Harry 1 up and Kade was square. The next point went to Pennant Hills with Miguel going down 2/1 which was closely followed by Ryan’s fighting half point following a clutch up and down from a greenside bunker on 18. So, 2.5 to 1.5 with Harry (1up) and Kade (1 down) coming up 17 in fast fading light and torrential rain. When the group reached the 17th green, putting was almost impossible. Harry closed out his match on 17, 2 and 1 to give us the win. Kade fought hard but couldn’t turn his match around and went down 1 down, leaving us winners 3.5 – 2.5.

Whilst a few of our players didn’t have their best games with them on the day, the grit and determination shown was admirable and was probably the determining factor in getting us over the line. The team currently leads Section 5, but we aren’t even half-way through the preliminary rounds, so there is lots of work to be done. Thank you to our loyal caddies and supporters, it really does make a difference having you all out there supporting our players. Next Sunday we take on Killara at Killara, 11.16am hit off.
